I am perfectly serious (although wildly optimistic) in suggesting that the only real solution to our recidivist criminal population is transportation.
ReplyDeleteSince we have a sad lack of suitable colonies, I would suggest that we find some nation that is amenable to taking them for a price: Liberia, perhaps. Purchase them citizenship - we wouldn't want to leave them stateless - and a one way ticket, stack them in cargo class, and shred their UK passports.
If this sounds like an unrealistic fantasy, I'd suggest that it's no less so than imagining that we can deal with an increasingly lawless population by means an ever softer, ever more expensive policing and justice system.
Something will have to give. We cannot protect the innocent by coddling the guilty. Based on London's example, I fear that we may simply give up on attempting the former rather than breaking our addiction to the latter.
